Applying for an SSN as an immigrant student

I will be reaching the U.S. for my studies by September. When can I apply for an SSN after I land in the U.S.?

You will first have to visit your local Social Security Administration and use their SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) program to verify your immigration status and determine if you qualify for an SSN or not. When you arrive in the U.S., you will have to wait for 10 days before applying for an SSN. This 10-day waiting period allows government systems to update your arrival information.
